Maintenance Mechanic, Engineering Technician, Process Operator. What do all of these job titles have in common? The answer is that they are all part of a growing segment of skilled trade jobs that are currently a hot commodity in the United States. These jobs require training that sits somewhere between a high school diploma and a traditional 4 year college degree. With an average pay of above $16 an hour and a skills gap that equates to less competition in the marketplace, these types of positions can provide a secure and stable career.
According to data provided by USA Today, many states are predicting fastest job growth in this middle skill job sector as opposed to any other sector. Add in the retirement of baby boomers, the return of offshore jobs, and the reduction of trade education, and you have a recipe for opportunity. These so called “middle skill” jobs are the future of our country and are being acknowledged by Vice President Joe Biden as such in an effort to drive federal funding to programs that facilitate the type of training they require.
Here at Micro Tech, we have been partnering with companies in this job sector for many years now. Having seen the skill gap and demand for trade workers gives us perspective into this job market. We encourage everyone to take a look into training programs in their area and invest some time into acquiring new skills. Who knows, it could lead to a more financially rewarding and engaging career.
